We know how important a pet is and that they are a big part of a family. At Stokes Law, we want to ensure that when you make your Will, your pet is taken care of when you pass away.

Pet owners know that a pet is not just a pet, they are part of your family. Just like other members of your family, a pet owner wants to ensure their pet is taken care of when they die. That is why it is important when preparing your Will to ensure that there is a clause specifying what happens to your pet seeing as a pet is considered property under Alberta law.

If you do not specify your wishes regarding what happens with your pet after you die, you will have no control over what happens to you pet and if a friend or family member does not make arrangements to adopt your pet, they may end up in an animal shelter.

There are many options for including your pet in your Will. You can dictate who will become responsible for your pets needs after you pass away and what, if any, compensation they may receive and even specify the exact purpose of the money they receive.

Take care in choosing the person who will care for your pet when you pass away. Talk to them prior to preparing your Will to make sure that your pet will fit in with their lifestyle and ensure that they share your views on health care options for your pet.

Should you wish to proceed with having your Will prepared to ensure your pet is properly taken care of, please don’t hesitate to contact Stokes Law for a consultation.
